Early Bloomers -- 2000

This first set  were blooming the last week of February in White County, AR.

These pre-vernals let you know that spring is just a few weeks away. 

Clayton.jpg (100668 bytes)  Spring Beauty..  Claytonia virginica.  Some of these bloomed all winter long this year.

deadnet.jpg (101035 bytes) Dead Nettle.. Lamium purpureum.  The square stem, opposite leaves, and bilabiate flowers lets you know that these are in the mint family along with Henbit.

Ranunc.jpg (99155 bytes) Buttercup.. Ranunculus sp.  Most of this beauties neighbors just had 5 petals.

These were blooming March 7, 2000 on a river bank near Searcy, AR

Bldrt.jpg (92850 bytes) Bloodroot .. Sanguinaria canadensis  .. These beauties don't last long but they are an awesome site whether alone or in a colony.

Saxif.jpg (100039 bytes)  Palmer's Saxifrage .. Saxifrage palmeri    It's really amazing how these can thrive in just about any  tiny rock crevice.

Dtchbrit.jpg (93477 bytes)  Dutchman's Breeches .. Dicentra cucullaria   Unusual to say the least.  Could the shape be related to the pollinators?
